We are an award winning organisation within the Umeå Municipality working with children under the teaching method of 'Kids tell the pro's what to do'. Unusual collaborations have led to new artistic expressions such as a Blog Opera, an Ice Hockey Musical and an Invisible Food project.
In 2014, Umeå is the European Capital of Culture. Many large-scale projects will take place throughout the city. Our project Fair City, however, focuses on Umeå, the children's creativity and the idea to create a more vibrant city. We want to create arenas for new meetings, and highlight the children's ideas that lead to development and new expressions.
Kulturverket therefore proudly presents Umeå's first world exposition, where children set the agenda. Umeå is divided into 9 parts. In each part there are schools, and in these schools are children of all ages, children who have their picture of what their particular part of Umeå looks like. In collaboration with the School of Architecture in Umeå, these nine districts design a pavilion each. Pavilions, which thus represent the different parts of Umeå.
During the school year 2012/2013, artists from Kulturverket and project partners(educational associations, non-profit organizations, Umeå University, and others) will work with pupils in the nine districts. The material generated will fill each pavilion - where we thus get access to the children's visions of a better city in the future.
